I Tried Making Money Online Using AI
– My Experience

A few months back, I kept seeing posts and videos claiming that anyone can earn a good side income using AI tools. Some claimed thousands of rupees a day, others talked about building an entire business around AI in a matter of weeks. Being naturally skeptical of anything that sounds too easy, I decided to test it myself instead of just reading about it. I gave myself one month, a small budget, and a simple goal — actually earn real money using AI, without spending on expensive courses or “secret” systems being sold online.

This is an honest account of what worked, what didn’t, and what I would tell someone starting from zero today.

Why I Decided to Try This

I already had a full-time job, so this was never meant to replace my income. I was curious whether AI tools could genuinely help an average person earn something extra, or whether the whole idea was mostly marketing aimed at selling courses. I also wanted to understand these tools better for my own work, so this experiment served two purposes at once. I gave myself three rules before starting. First, no paid courses or expensive software subscriptions beyond what was absolutely necessary. Second, everything had to be something a normal person with no special skills could realistically attempt. Third, I would track every rupee earned and spent, so the results would be honest, not exaggerated.

Week One: Exploring the Options

The first week went into research rather than earning. There are dozens of ways people claim to make money using AI, and most articles online just list them without any real detail. I shortlisted four methods that seemed practical enough to test: Freelance writing and editing using AI as a drafting assistant, selling AI-generated designs and templates, creating short-form content for social media, and offering small AI-assisted services like resume writing or basic data organisation for local businesses. I avoided anything involving reselling AI subscriptions or vague “AI trading bot” claims, since these felt closer to scams than genuine income methods.

Week Two: Freelance Writing With AI Assistance

This is where I spent most of my effort, since I already had some writing background. I signed up on two freelance platforms and used AI purely as a first-draft tool. My approach was simple. I would understand the client’s requirement properly, use AI to generate a rough draft, then rewrite significant portions myself to match the client’s tone and add real research or personal insight. The honest truth is that clients can tell when content feels generic or overly polished in a robotic way. My first two submissions using heavy AI output, with minimal editing, got rejected. Once I started treating AI as a starting point rather than the final product, results improved. By the end of the second week, I had completed three small writing projects and earned close to two thousand rupees. Not huge money, but proof that the method works if you put in genuine effort.

Week Three: Selling Templates and Designs

I tried creating simple digital products, such as resume templates, planner designs, and social media templates, using AI tools for the initial design work. I then adjusted colours, layout, and text manually to make them look less generic, since a lot of AI-generated designs tend to look similar to each other. I listed these on a couple of marketplaces. This part was slower than expected. Unlike freelance writing where you get paid for direct work, selling templates depends on people actually finding and buying them, which takes time and some marketing effort. By the end of the week, I had only two sales, earning around four hundred rupees. The lesson here was that passive income ideas using AI still require patience and consistent promotion, they are not truly passive from day one.

Week Four: Local Business Services

This turned out to be the most interesting part of the experiment. I reached out to two small local businesses I knew personally and offered to help them with things like writing product descriptions, organising their customer data in spreadsheets, and drafting simple promotional messages, using AI to speed up the work while I handled the accuracy and local context myself. One shop owner agreed to pay me for organising his inventory list and writing basic descriptions for an online catalogue he was setting up. This single project paid more than everything else combined in the previous three weeks. It made me realise that individuals and small businesses, not big companies, often see the most practical value in this kind of help, and they are usually willing to pay for someone who can save them time.

What Actually Worked

Looking back at the entire month, three things stood out clearly. AI is extremely useful for speeding up work you already know how to do, rather than creating entirely new skills for you. It also works best when combined with real human judgement, since clients and buyers can usually sense generic, unedited AI output. Finally, offering AI-assisted services directly to people or small businesses, rather than trying to sell generic digital products online, gave the best and quickest results in my case.

What Did Not Work

Selling templates and generic digital products was slower and less profitable than I expected, mainly because that market is already crowded with similar products. I also tried a couple of content ideas for social media, hoping they would attract engagement and eventually paid brand deals. This did not lead to any income within the month, since building an audience takes much longer than four weeks, AI or no AI.

Final Numbers

By the end of the month, my total earnings came to a little over five thousand rupees, after subtracting minor costs like platform fees. It is not life-changing money, but considering I started with zero clients, zero audience, and no prior online selling experience, I consider it a reasonable result for one month of part-time effort.

My Honest Advice

If you are thinking about trying this yourself, do not expect AI alone to earn you money. Think of it as a tool that helps you work faster and smarter, not a shortcut that replaces effort or skill. The people who actually earned money from me during this experiment paid for my judgement, my understanding of their needs, and my ability to check and correct whatever AI produced. AI did the heavy lifting on drafts and ideas, but the value I offered was still fundamentally human.

Start small, pick one method instead of trying everything at once, and be patient with the slower approaches like selling digital products. Most importantly, be honest with yourself about how much effort you are actually putting in, because that, far more than the AI tool you use, decides whether this works for you.

I plan to continue this experiment for a longer period, maybe three months this time, to see whether the local business services approach can grow into something more consistent. I will share an update once I have real numbers to show.
